Mulch, Moisture, & Magic: Why Fall Mulching Matters in the PNW

Frost Waits for No One! — here’s how to protect your Pacific Northwest garden before winter hits.

Before winter sets in, the Pacific Northwest landscape transforms — golden leaves fall, the air turns crisp, and the rain… well, it just keeps on coming. 🌧️ But before you retreat indoors with your favorite warm drink, your garden could use one last helping hand: a fresh layer of mulch.

Timing is Everything

In our region, the right time to mulch is just after the first hard frost, but before the ground freezes solid. Mulching too early traps warmth in the soil, keeping your plants from fully going dormant — which makes them vulnerable when real cold hits.

But wait too long, and your plants’ roots could suffer from freezing and thawing cycles that cause the soil to “heave” (literally push roots out of the ground). The sweet spot? When the weather tells you winter’s on the way, but your shovel can still dig in.

How to Apply Winter Mulch Like a Pro

Once your garden is weeded and cleared of debris, spread a 2–4" layer of lightweight organic mulch — bark or compost are perfect choices. Keep the mulch a few inches away from trunks and stems to prevent rot and pests (think donut, not bagel 🍩).

Finish with a light watering to help everything settle in and stay put through the season’s storms.

The Benefits Are Rooted in Science

Winter mulch is like a cozy blanket for your plants. It:

  • 🌡️ Stabilizes soil temperature — protecting roots from harsh freeze-thaw cycles.

  • 💧 Locks in moisture — reducing the drying effects of wind and cold.

  • 🌿 Suppresses weeds — stopping early spring weeds before they sprout.

  • 🌎 Prevents erosion — shielding topsoil from winter rains.

  • 🌱 Enriches the soil — as organic mulch breaks down, it feeds the ground for spring growth.
